Canadian Law Will Restrict Sales of Single Use Plastics Beginning in December
Prohibitions on the sale of single-use items including straws and cutlery will go in effect December 20.
Prohibitions on the sale of certain single-use plastic items in Canada go into effect on December 20. The regulations prohibit the sale of several categories of single-use plastics, including checkout bags, cutlery, foam food service ware, stirrers and straws. The manufacture and import for sale of these items has been prohibited since 2022. Manufacture, import and sale for export of these items will be prohibited beginning in 2025.
An exception to the regulations will allow the purchase of plastic flexible single-use drinking straws, intended to preserve access for those with medical needs.

Canada’s Department of the Environment and Department of Health published a on plastic pollution in 2020. The report concluded that macroplastics in the environment cause direct physical harm to organisms and adversely impact habitats. The Single-use Plastics Prohibition Regulations were proposed in 2021 and enacted in June of 2022.
