PTXPO Recap: Lightweighting with Foaming Technologies
Check out what you missed on the PTXPO show floor. Foaming technologies have long offered molders a way to reduce part weight, but a new approach demonstrated by Engel and Moxietec takes it further.
Foaming technologies have long offered molders a way to reduce part weight, but a new approach demonstrated by Engel and Moxietec at PTXPO takes it further.
This process combines a proprietary additive, precision blending, and a patented nozzle design to produce lightweight, high-strength plastic parts with uniform microcellular foam structures. The demonstration part—a combination of polypropylene and low-density polyethylene—achieved nearly 40% weight reduction without sacrificing strength or creating weld lines, making it well-suited for applications like plastic pallets.
This video takes a closer look at how the process works, including cycle times, automation, and how the new nozzle prevents cold slugs and improves part quality.
