MuCell Extrusion Buys Dow’s Sheet Patents

Last month, MuCell Extrusion LLC, Woburn, Mass., bought the patent portfolio of Dow Chemical Co., Midland, Mich., covering polyolefin sheet extrusion. Said Mark Lindenfelzer, president of MuCell Extrusion, “We provide expertise in process development and co-development programs, and Dow offers formulation expertise in resins. All of the relevant intellectual property has now been bundled into one source.” MuCell Extrusion’s microcellular process uses supercritical fluids as a physical foaming agent.
In a related announcement, MuCell Extrusion signed a license agreement with EDV Packaging Solutions, S.A., of Barcelona, Spain, which will utilize MuCell Extrusion’s technology to produce foamed polypropylene barrier sheets for food packaging in Europe. “This agreement, combined with our coextrusion expertise, will allow us to make a giant step in offering a new range of foamed polypropylene sheets with EVOH to food producers and brand owners,” notes Jordi Pursals, president of EDV.
