Plastek Group Expands EDM Capacity
The Erie, Penn. based molder and moldmaker has invested in Sodick wire and sinker EDMs, as well as an EDM drill from the supplier, to reduce lead times and increase throughputs.
The Plastek Group (Erie, Penn.) has purchased multiple pieces of EDM metalworking equipment from Sodick, including two wire EDMs, two sinker EDMs and an EDM drill. A company spokesperson told Plastics Technology that Plastek’s tooling operation had existing wire and sinker EDMs, with the new equipment replacing older machines to add to the company’s capabilities and automation levels. In the case of the new wire EDMs, they’re expected to be 20% faster than the machines they’re replacing.
The new sinker and wire EDMs, specifically, will be used to reduce lead times and increase throughputs, according to the spokesperson. Next up, the company is planning on purchasing precision 5-axis CNCs to augment milling capabilities and allow the company to cut smaller ribs and other minute features that it currently EDMs. All of this equipment will be slotted into Plastek’s existing mold shops: Triangle Tool and Penn Erie Tool.
The specific equipment invested in was chosen after an evaluation process composed of 32 points of interest, including machine test cuts, service availability, accuracy, long-term pricing, and equipment availability, among others. The Plastek Group anticipates the new equipment’s delivery in September.
