Mold-Change Time Targeted with Training, Technology
Engel is offering technology and training to molders to help them optimize their mold-changing process.
Injection molding machine and automation supplier Engel offers an array of technologies to simplify and speed up mold changes, including magnetic clamping platens and quick couplings; intelligent assistance systems; and the famox mold changing system for automating the set-up process. In addition, the company is now providing three different training courses that are tailored to customers’ different requirements on the basis of the conditions in the plant and the know-how of the production staff.
Basics, Advanced and Expert courses differ in terms of the depth of the curriculum and the mold change methods covered. While Basics provides an introduction to the topic and demonstrates the potential using a pilot machine in the Engel training center, the two more advanced courses take place on site at the processor’s facility.
Together, the mold set-up processes are analyzed, and the various methods for product change optimization are evaluated. Starting with magnetic rapid clamping systems and multiple couplings, through mold positioning and preheating, to the use of a Setup wizard in the Expert course. In all three courses, Engel collaborates with Stäubli and other partner companies.
In the face of the skilled worker shortage, Engel notes that standardized menu-driven mold changes not only save time but can reduce the risk of errors. The Setup wizard works as a checklist that interactively guides a machine operator through the individual steps required for the mold change. To the extent possible, the Setup wizard handles the program steps automatically, with manual steps confirmed on the control unit. For less experienced employees, this allows them to set up molds safely and without errors, while for experienced mold set-up teams, the Setup wizard further boosts efficiency.
Engel is offering the new product change optimization courses in Austria, Germany and Switzerland. The courses are available in other countries on request.
