In an effort to get the younger generation thinking about a future in plastics, Wittmann Battenfeld Inc., Torrington, Conn., hosted a Manufacturing Day event for local high school teenagers at its US headquarters on Friday, Oct. 2.  The event was targeted toward the younger generation about to enter the workforce, to educate them on the types of job opportunities that are available in the manufacturing sector and to help discredit some common misconceptions. 

Students began the day with an introduction to both Wittmann Battenfeld and the plastics industry as a whole. They learned the basics of the plastic production process and generally what part Wittmann Battenfeld’s robots, molding machines and auxiliary equipment plays in the grand scheme of it.

“The industry as a whole truly needs young people, most of whom are in the process of deciding on their career path, to see the many great opportunities that exist in manufacturing,” said David Preusse, president of Wittmann Battenfeld. “We here at Wittmann Battenfeld have a great story to tell that will hopefully inspire young people who may be interested in working in manufacturing, robotics and plastics to pursue those fields.”

Visitors were led through various stations at the company to hear presentations and see technology demonstrations. First, they headed to the robot cable and assembly station, then to the demo room to see material handling and auxiliary equipment, and lastly, they visited the company’s new injection molding machine addition before a final Q&A with light refreshments in the café.  At each station, Wittmann Battenfeld employees explained the technology being shown and discuss the specifics of their jobs.
