Lanxess AG (U.S. office in Pittsburgh) plans to build a new world-scale nylon plastics plant in Antwerp, Belgium. It is due for completion in the first quarter of 2014 with a capacity of 198 million lb/yr. While not specifying which nylons will be produced in the new plant, Lanxess noted that it will be located near the company’s caprolactam plant. Caprolactam is the precursor for nylon 6. Lanxess also makes nylon 66. Automotive is expected to be a main market for the output of the new plant.

In addition, Lanxess is expanding its global network of compounding facilities. New plants are under construction in Gastonia, N.C., and in Porto Feliz, Brazil.
