The sauce is red, but the new bottle is green—i.e., based partly on renewable plant-based feedstocks. H.J. Heinz Co. announced a strategic partnership with the Coca-Cola Co. that enables Heinz to produce ketchup bottles using Coca-Cola’s Plant-Bottle material. This is PET based on up to 30% ethylene glycol derived from Brazilian sugarcane ethanol. Heinz’s 20-oz bottles will move to Plant-Bottle technology in June and the firm expects to produce 120 million PlantBottle packages this year. Coca-Cola aims to convert all its plastic packaging to PlantBottle by 2020.
Dr. Michael Okoroafor, v.p. of Packaging R&D/Innovation at H.J. Heinz will discuss the strategy behind this development in his keynote address at the BioPlastek 2011 Forum on Bioplastics Today and Tomorrow. Sponsored by Schotland Business Research, the Forum will take place June 27-29 in N.Y.C.
