Cereplast Forms Subsidiary for Algae-Based Bioplastics

WEB EXCLUSIVE: Algaeplast is a new wholly-owned subsidiary of , El Segundo, Calif., a maker of compostable and other biobased compounds. The new subsidiary will focus on the development and production of algae-based bioplastic compounds, in which Cereplast has been a pioneer. Cereplast Algae Bioplastics grades based on polypropylene were commercialized in 2011, and Biopropylene 109D—a PP/starch compound with 20% post-industrial algae biomatter came out last December. The company first launched the concept in late 2009, with a target of bioplastic compound with 50% algae content. Algaeplast’s ultimate goal is new polymers from 100% algae.
