APPLICATION: Polycarbonate Adds Style to Electric-Car Charging Stations
Two tough, flame-retardant PC grades lend style and ease-of-use to new electric-car charging stations.
ChargePoint of Campbell, Calif., has the world’s largest network of EV (electrical vehicle) charging stations, with over 15,000 charging locations and a 70% market share. It collaborated with , Pittsburgh, when it sought a tough and highly flame-resistant material to provide stylish protection for its chargers.
“Many of the charging locations are outdoors and in unattended public locations. We chose Makrolon polycarbonate because it is strong, rugged, and can withstand the elements,” says Dimitrios Papadogonas, ChargePoint v.p. of marketing. The company’s new CT40121 Bollard Dual Charging Station utilizes Makrolon 6487 PC for the top cap and plug holsters. The material was selected for its UL 94V-0 rating at 1.5mm and 5VA rating at 3 mm. Also used in the charging station is Makrolon 6557 clear PC for the front-facing panels. That grade is impact resistant and has a V-0 rating at 3 mm.
